On Sunday 24th June I made my way to Kentish Town for the Mixtress Summer event. Like an idiot I left the house without an umbrella and by the time I got to Kentish Town there was a brief but intense torrential rainfall that i was caught in. Late, drenched and lost (my map was soggy), I was ready to turn back when I bumped into fellow blogger Ketisha aka Sugar Kinesis who fortunately had an Iphone and we were able to find our way to the venue for the event. The venue was this lovely studio with high ceilings, open plan and a great kitchen. It definitely fit in with the ‘mixtress theme’.
First up was Dr A I James of MMM..Hair (Mumma Marvelous Medicine for Hair). She runs her own hair care business and was giving demonstrations of how to make a variety of products such as flax seed gel, hair scrubs and deep conditioners to name a few. Since I came late I missed the start of some of her recipes.
Here’s a recipe to make a Protein Mask:
You will need:
- 500ml mayonnaise
- 200ml honey
- 3 eggs
- 2tablespoons of a carrier oil (examples: sweet almond, coconut, olive oil)
- 1ml of an essential oil (examples rosemary (damaged hair), rosewood (dry hair) lavender, carott seed, ylang ylang)
Mix together and put on hair. Leave it for 15 – 30 minutes then wash off.
Note about Essential Oils: If the mixture is going on your skin(face) the amount of essential oils you should put in should be 0.5% or less of the total amount. For body and hair: f you are going to leave the mixture on, then add 2% (of the TOTAL amount) of essential oils, and if you are going to wash the mixture off then 3% (of the TOTAL amount) of essential oils. Also if heating a mixture, add the essential oils after the mixture is cooled down.

After Dr James, Sonya Evelyn gave a quick demonstration using Rhassoul clay. She has a line of products called FRO her that soon will be available in Boots after September (including a clay mask). SO look out for her product range and support!! Click here for her website.
Finally, Belinda Raji of Be Unique Hair Care demonstrated how to make a Hair Spritz, a Bentonite Hair mask and a Deep Conditioner.
Here’s a recipe for the hair spritz:
- 78ml Water (Herbal water is recommended)
- 10ml Aloe Vera juice
- 7g vegetable Glycerine
- 4ml of liquid oils
- 1ml of preservative (Mockrill)
Place all ingredients in a spray bottle and shake before every use Note: There are 2 types of Herbal water: Decoction – involves boiling the herbs Infusions – made like tea. Soake the herbs in hot water. Use a ratio of 7g:200ml when creating decoctions and infusions. Examples of herbs/leaves: Burdock Root – strengthens the hai shaft, adds shine and body and stimulates new hair growth. A useful website for supplies: Of A Simple Nature
Apart from almost being trampled by women determined to get products that Belinda Raji made and coming away with nothing, I had a lovely time 🙂 I learnt SO much and I feel like my inner mixtress has been awakened. I just needs to hurry up and buy materials and start mixing. Tina was a fabulous host and looked great in her outfit!! I will definitely try some of these recipes, and I’ll make sure to share them with you when I do. I cant wait for the next event by Manestream Beauty 🙂
Till next time,
